Café-quality espresso. Zero plastic. No guilt.

Caffè Borbone ESE coffee pods are the easy, eco-conscious way to make proper espresso at home — and unlike most pods, they leave nothing behind. Each 44mm pod is fully compostable: the filter paper, the coffee grounds, all of it goes straight to your compost or green bin. No plastic, no aluminium, no separating, no guilt about your daily coffee habit.

Five Neapolitan blends, real crema

Inside every pod is authentic Caffè Borbone espresso, roasted in Naples — rich, full-bodied and topped with the kind of crema you'd expect from a café. Five blends mean there's an ESE coffee pod for every taste, from the bold Black through to a full-flavoured decaf. Drop one in, brew, and you've got a genuine espresso in under a minute, with no grinder and no mess.

How to use the pods

  1. Switch on and warm up — turn on your ESE pod machine and let it come up to temperature.
  2. Unwrap your pod — take a Cialda out of its wrapper and place it in the filter holder, paper side flat.
  3. Lock it in — insert the holder into the machine and secure it firmly.
  4. Brew — start extraction and let it run for around 25–30 seconds for a classic espresso.
  5. Enjoy & dispose — lift out the used pod and pop it in your compost or food waste. No rinsing, no grinding, no mess.

Frequently asked question

ESE stands for Easy Serving Espresso. It's a 44mm ground coffee pod wrapped in filter paper.

No plastic shell and no aluminium capsule.

You drop the pod into your machine, brew, and then compost or bin the whole thing. It's the new single-serve format, and it makes a proper crema-topped espresso.

Any 44mm ESE pod machine. That includes ESE machines, the iconic Frog Revolution and Baby Frog, and most Italian pod machines. If your machine specifies '44mm ESE pods' or 'cialde', these will fit.

No — they're a completely different format. Nespresso uses sealed plastic or aluminium capsules. ESE pods are soft, round, paper-wrapped pods. They won't fit a Nespresso machine, and Nespresso capsules won't fit an ESE machine.

If you have a Nespresso Original machine, see our Nespresso compatible capsules instead.

There are five.

  • Nera is the boldest — rich, intense, made for milk drinks.
  • Rossa is the balanced everyday cup.
  • Blu is smooth and low in acidity.
  • Oro is refined, full-bodied and naturally sweet.
  • Decaf gives you full flavour without the caffeine.

If you like strong coffee, start with Nera or Rossa; if you prefer something smoother, try Blu or Oro.

Each ESE pod contains around 7g of ground coffee — typically more than a Nespresso capsule (which holds around 5–6g). That's part of why ESE pods tend to produce a fuller and stronger espresso.

No — each ESE pod is single-use. But unlike plastic capsules that linger in landfill, a used pod goes straight to your compost or green bin, so there's no waste guilt.
